Gage Calibration Intervals: How to Set and Manage a Calibration Program

How to set calibration intervals for measurement tools, track due dates, and respond when a gage comes back out of tolerance.

hasn’t, either, which is exactly the problem a calibration interval
system exists to prevent.

Calibration intervals aren’t one-size-fits-all

A gauge used constantly in a harsh shop environment drifts out of
calibration faster than one used occasionally in a climate-controlled
lab, which is why a single blanket interval — “calibrate everything
annually” — is usually either wasteful for low-use gauges or risky for
high-use ones. Interval assignment should be based on usage frequency,
environment, and the gauge’s own calibration history.

“As found” and “as left” data actually drive the schedule

Every calibration should record both the “as found” condition
(how far out of tolerance the gauge was before adjustment) and the
“as left” condition (its state after calibration). A gauge that
consistently comes back “as found: in tolerance” is a candidate for a
longer interval; one that regularly comes back out of tolerance needs
a shorter one, or should be evaluated for replacement — the historical
data is what should adjust the schedule, not a fixed calendar rule
applied forever.

Out-of-tolerance gauges trigger a bigger question

When a gauge comes back significantly out of tolerance, the
question isn’t just “recalibrate it” — it’s whether any product
measured with that gauge since its last good calibration needs to be
re-evaluated. A calibration program without a documented process for
that back-check is missing the piece that actually protects product
quality, not just the gauge’s own accuracy record.
