Engineering teams are good at optimizing for
specifications. The harder problem is making sure those
specifications actually came from what the customer wanted in the
first place. Quality Function Deployment exists to keep that
translation from getting lost.

QFD’s signature artifact is the House of Quality — a matrix
that maps customer requirements (“voice of the customer”) against
engineering characteristics, with a roof-shaped correlation section
showing how those characteristics interact. It looks complicated on
a whiteboard, but the underlying question is simple: does this
technical spec actually serve a requirement the customer cares
about?

QFD happens earliest in the process — ideally before a
design is locked in. Running it after engineering has already
committed to a design direction turns it into a documentation
exercise rather than a design input.

Not every customer requirement carries equal weight, and QFD
builds in relative importance ratings so engineering effort goes
toward the characteristics that matter most. Without that weighting
step, a QFD matrix just becomes a long list of requirements with no
guidance on where to focus limited engineering time.

A full House of Quality includes a column comparing how well
competitor products meet each customer requirement. That comparison
keeps the exercise from becoming purely internal — a
requirement your team rates as “adequately met” can look very
different next to what’s actually shipping from a competitor.
