to run a specific machine isn’t fully staffed — it’s one sick
day away from a bottleneck. A skills matrix makes that kind of
single-point-of-failure visible before it becomes an actual
production problem.

A skills matrix lists every employee against every critical task
or machine, typically scored on a simple scale — untrained,
in training, competent, able to train others. The value isn’t the
document itself; it’s what becomes visible once it’s filled out:
which tasks have only one qualified person, and which employees are
overloaded as the default backup for everything.

Saying “we should cross-train more” without a schedule tends to

output for time on the floor. A skills matrix that also tracks a
target completion date for each gap turns cross-training from an
aspiration into a plan a supervisor can actually be held to.

Someone marked “competent” on a task they haven’t performed in
eight months may not actually still be competent — skills
atrophy without use, especially on tasks involving judgment rather
than pure repetition. Some facilities build in periodic
re-verification for infrequently used skills rather than treating
the original sign-off as permanent.
