Picking an industrial Ethernet protocol isn’t really a technical
decision most of the time — it’s usually decided by whatever equipment
is already on the floor. A plant full of Siemens gear and a plant full
of Rockwell gear tend to land on completely different protocols, almost
regardless of which one is technically “better” for the application.

Why plant networking needs its own protocols

Standard office Ethernet and TCP/IP weren’t designed for the
real-time, deterministic communication industrial control systems
often need — a robot arm or a safety interlock can’t tolerate the same
kind of unpredictable network delay a web browser shrugs off. Industrial
Ethernet protocols adapt standard Ethernet hardware to meet that
real-time requirement, each with its own approach and its own vendor
ecosystem behind it.

Why Modbus TCP still matters despite being older

Modbus TCP’s simplicity and lack of licensing cost are exactly why
it persists as the common denominator in mixed-vendor environments,
even though it lacks some of the more advanced real-time features of
EtherNet/IP or PROFINET. A plant integrating a 20-year-old piece of
equipment alongside brand-new controllers often finds Modbus TCP is the
one protocol both ends can actually speak, even if it’s not the
“best” choice for either piece of equipment in isolation.

It’s easy to confuse the protocol a PLC uses to talk to other
devices with the ladder logic programming inside that PLC — they’re
