ISO/IEC 17025: What Calibration Lab Accreditation Actually Confirms

A calibration certificate is only as trustworthy as
the lab that issued it. ISO/IEC 17025 is the standard that lets a
customer, an auditor, or a regulator trust that certificate without
having to independently verify the lab’s competence themselves.
What 17025 actually covers
ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the general
competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Unlike ISO 9001,
which certifies that a quality management system exists and is
followed, 17025 combines management system requirements with technical
competence requirements specific to measurement and testing — covering
things like measurement uncertainty, method validation, and equipment
traceability that a generic QMS standard doesn’t address at all.

A lab accredited to 17025 is only accredited for the specific
measurements listed on its scope of accreditation — a lab might be
accredited to calibrate torque wrenches but not pressure gauges, for
example. Checking that scope, not just the accreditation certificate
itself, is the only way to know whether a lab is actually qualified for
the specific calibration a customer needs.
Traceability and measurement uncertainty
Every calibration a 17025-accredited lab performs has to be
traceable through an unbroken chain of comparisons back to a national
measurement institute, such as NIST in the United States. The lab also
has to state a measurement uncertainty budget for each calibration — a
quantified estimate of how much the reported value could reasonably
vary — rather than reporting a single number as if it were exact.

How is ISO 17025 different from Measurement System Analysis?
ISO 17025 confirms that a calibration laboratory is competent and traceable. Measurement System Analysis is a separate exercise that validates whether one specific gauge, used by its actual operators, produces repeatable and reproducible results.
