DMAIC is what they’re actually trained to do — a five-phase
structure for improvement projects that keeps a team from jumping to
a solution before anyone has confirmed what the real problem is.

Teams under pressure to show results often skip straight from
Define to Improve, implementing a fix based on assumptions rather
than measured data. Without a validated baseline, there’s no way to
prove the improvement actually worked — the team is left
arguing from opinion instead of evidence when someone questions the
result.
A DMAIC Analyze phase typically pairs statistical tools with
structured root-cause techniques, since a variable that correlates
with a defect isn’t automatically its cause. Skipping analysis and
moving straight to a fix that “seems obvious” is the second most
common way DMAIC projects fail to hold their gains.

Once a fix is implemented and the metric improves, momentum on a
project tends to evaporate — the team moves on to the next
problem. Without a formal control plan, updated work instructions,
and a monitoring plan, the original problem often creeps back within
months, and nobody notices until the metric has fully reverted.
