Safety Light Curtains & Presence-Sensing Devices: A Machine Guarding Primer

A light curtain does the same job as a physical guard — stopping a machine before a hand enters the danger zone — without blocking the operator's access to the point of operation. How presence-sensing fits OSHA 1910.212, and the math behind safety distance.

A light curtain doesn’t stop a machine — it tells the machine to
stop, and the actual stopping distance has to be calculated against how
fast a hand can travel through the detection zone. Get that calculation
wrong and the curtain can technically “work” while still not preventing
contact.

What presence-sensing devices actually do

Presence-sensing devices are one of the acceptable machine guarding
methods recognized under OSHA 1910.212, alongside physical barrier
guards and two-hand tripping devices. A light curtain creates an
invisible detection field, typically infrared, across a machine’s
point of operation; when the field is broken, the control system stops
hazardous motion. Unlike a physical barrier, a light curtain guards an
opening without blocking operator access — useful when a job requires
frequent reaching into the work area.

The light curtain has to be positioned far enough from the hazard
that the machine can fully stop before a hand or body part, moving at
the assumed approach speed, could reach the danger zone after breaking
the detection field. A curtain mounted too close to the hazard for the
machine’s actual stopping time doesn’t provide real protection, even
though it appears to be functioning correctly.

Muting: a legitimate feature that gets misused

Muting temporarily disables a presence-sensing device during a
specific, defined part of a machine’s cycle — for example, while a
pallet of material passes through on a conveyor, where a person isn’t
expected to be present. Muting is a legitimate, standard feature when
properly configured with muting sensors that confirm it’s actually a
pallet and not a person. It becomes a serious hazard when muting is
extended beyond its intended window or used to work around a
nuisance-tripping problem instead of fixing the underlying cause.

Why light curtains complement, not replace, other guarding

A light curtain guards against reaching into a specific detection
zone — it doesn’t address every hazard a machine presents, like
overhead crush hazards or hazards from a different access point
entirely. A complete guarding solution often combines a light curtain
